You attack x% faster with weapons. Getting 100% attack speed for example means you attack double as fast.
You attack x% faster with weapons. Getting 100% attack speed means your weapons have their cooldown halved, making you attack twice as fast.

The game uses several hidden stats to calculate the attack speed, which means that attack speed doesn't always work as you would expect. Here are the exceptions:
Attack Speed is a powerful way to increase your damage per second, increase your rate of healing with Life Steal, and it allows you to handle big crowds of enemies and horde waves easier.

Melee weapons' attack speed is affected by their Range. You can read about the effects on the range page.
How the game calculates attack speed is more complicated, but in most cases, it simply makes you attack x% faster. There are some exceptions:
* Melee weapons' attack speed is slightly affected by having higher Range. For example, 100 Range will reduce your attack speed by 3% to 10% (depending on the weapon), tho they will also be able to hit more enemies.

Negative Attack speed increases the cooldown of your weapons, meaning you attack slower. However it uses a different Formular. It only reduces one of the hidden stats, called "Weapon speed". For example -100% attack speed means you attack around 30% to 50% slower, not 100%. It depends highly on the weapon and ranged weapons are generally affected harder by negative attack speed compared to melee weapons. This is because melee weapons's attack speed also depends on your range. So the Weapon speed plays a smaller part.
* Negative Attack speed increases the cooldown of your weapons, meaning you attack slower. However, it uses a different formula: You would expect -100% attack speed to double the cooldown of the weapon, but that is only the case for a very few weapons. Slow weapons and ranged weapons are hit harder by negative attack speed. If you have -100% attack speed, a Fist (Tier 4) attacks 14% less often. While a Nuclear Launcher (T4) attacks 46% less often.
* There is a minimum attack speed for weapons. Going too close to this limit results in severe diminishing returns for some weapons. Fast melee weapons like Fist (T4) and Circular Saw (T4) have diminishing returns from 0% Attack speed, but are less affected than ranged weapons. Fast ranged weapons like SMG (T4), Flamethrower (T4), Potato Thrower (T4), and Minigun (T3 & T4) also have diminishing returns from 0% and higher attack speed, and are affected more than the melee weapons. The diminishing returns start out slow, and become more prominent the more attack speed you have. So getting the first 50%-100% attack speed while being affected by diminishing returns can still be worth it, but getting more will give very little value.

This weapon speed has a hard limit. Going too far past this limit results in severe diminishing returns. Fast melee weapons like Fist and Circular Saw tier 3+ reach this amount after about 200%. While fast ranged weapons like SMG Tier 4, Flamethrower Tier 4, Potato Thrower Tier 4, Minigun Tier 3. Minigun Tier 4 already has diminishing returns from 0% attack speed.
It is worth noting that the tooltip rounds the attack speed of your weapons down to the nearest 0.01 second. However this is just a visual - the actual game doesn't round the value.

Attack speed doesn't apply to turrets, or to items like Cyberball, Baby with a Beard, or Rip and Tear.
Attack speed doesn't apply to turrets, or effects like Cyberball, Baby with a Beard, or Rip and Tear
Also applies to Ranged Weapons but not engineering turrets or mines. There is no limit to this. If this is negative you attack x% slower.

Attack Speed

Attack Speed

You attack x% faster with weapons. Getting 100% attack speed means your weapons have their cooldown halved, making you attack twice as fast.

Attack Speed is a powerful way to increase your damage per second, increase your rate of healing with Life Steal, and it allows you to handle big crowds of enemies and horde waves easier.

How the game calculates attack speed is more complicated, but in most cases, it simply makes you attack x% faster. There are some exceptions:

 • Melee weapons' attack speed is slightly affected by having higher Range. For example, 100 Range will reduce your attack speed by 3% to 10% (depending on the weapon), tho they will also be able to hit more enemies.
 • Negative Attack speed increases the cooldown of your weapons, meaning you attack slower.
 • There is a minimum attack speed for weapons.
