Chunky's low HP Regeneration scaling and irreparably low Life Steal make it difficult to reliably recover HP. Low Dodge scaling also means that the most effective way to improve survivability is to invest heavily into Max HP and Armor to simply be able to take as many hits as possible. HP Regeneration and Dodge can still be beneficial, but they will require twice the investment for the same value compared to other characters.
The most efficient source of HP recovery for Chunky is Luck. Luck increases the chance for Enemies to drop consumables which recover a base of 3 HP. Chunky heals an additional 3 HP from consumables for a total of 6, and further investment in "+X HP recovered from consumables" through Lemonade and Weird Food is easily manageable. The Tree item can also provide more consumables from trees as well as more item drops when combined with a high Luck stat.

Other sources of supplemental HP recovery include:
Healing
*Cute Monkey - heals an average of 8 HP per 100 Materials collected. Stacking multiple Cute Monkeys will provide considerable healing.

Since Speed modifications are reduced by 100%, Chunky's movement speed cannot be modified from its base value. All Speed increases and decreases from items should be disregarded when considering whether or not to purchase them. Esty's Couch, for example, can never provide Chunky with HP Regeneration since Speed cannot be reduced below 100%, effectively turning it into nothing more than a very expensive increase of 6.25 Max HP and ~2% Damage.

Padding

Padding will increase Max HP by a moderate amount depending on currently held Materials. For every 80 Materials held, Chunky's Max HP is increased by 1.25 which results in a Damage increase of roughly 0.42%. For every 960 Materials, the total Max HP bonus will be 15 (12 x 1.25), providing 5% increased Damage.

* - Heals 3 HP every 3 seconds while within the turret's range.

Each additional Padding will further increase this bonus. With two Padding items, 960 Materials will grant 30 Max HP and 10% increased Damage. Theoretically, if a player managed to obtain six copies of Padding, the amount of Damage gained per Material held would be comparable to Saver's passive effect.
Padding
Chunky's ability only grants Damage for permanent increases to your max HP. Max HP Increases granted by  's ability does not increase your Damage.

Due to Chunky receiving -100% to Speed modifications, Padding has no downsides for this character.

Piggy Bank allows the Max HP and resulting Damage gained from Padding to exponentially increase by saving Materials each round. Depending on how early Piggy Bank is acquired and how many Paddings are obtained, this combination can result in a sizable HP pool and Damage bonus.

General Guide

Healing

Chunky's low HP Regeneration scaling and irreparably low Life Steal make it difficult to reliably recover HP. Low Dodge scaling also means that the most effective way to improve survivability is to invest heavily into Max HP and Armor to simply be able to take as many hits as possible. HP Regeneration and Dodge can still be beneficial, but they will require twice the investment for the same value compared to other characters.

The one efficient source of HP recovery for Chunky is Luck. Luck increases the chance for Enemies to drop consumables which recover a base of 3 HP.

Chunky heals an additional +3 HP from consumables for a total of 6, and further investment in "+X HP recovered from consumables" through Lemonade.png Lemonade and Weird Food.png Weird Food is easily manageable.

The Tree.png Tree item can also provide more consumables from trees as well as more item drops when combined with a high Luck stat.

Other sources of supplemental HP recovery include:

 • Cute Monkey.png Cute Monkey - Heals an average of 8 HP per 100 Materials collected. Stacking multiple Cute Monkeys will provide considerable healing.
 • Medical Turret.png Medical Turret - Heals 3 HP every 3 seconds while within the turret's range.

Padding

Chunky's ability only grants Damage for permanent increases to your max HP. Max HP Increases granted by Padding.png Padding's ability does not increase your Damage.

Speed

Since Speed modifications are reduced by 100%, Chunky's movement speed cannot be modified from its base value. All Speed increases and decreases from items should be disregarded when considering whether or not to purchase them. Esty's Couch.png Esty's Couch, for example, can never provide Chunky with HP Regeneration since Speed cannot be reduced below 100%, effectively turning it into nothing more than a very expensive increase of 6.25 Max HP and ~2% Damage.

However the items with Speed Decreases become very attractive options.

Here is a list of Items that have synergy with Chunky, such as negative speed, or that gives a good amount of Max HP.
