Attack Speed
You attack x% faster with weapons. Getting 100% attack speed means your weapons have their cooldown halved, making you attack twice as fast.

Attack Speed is a powerful way to increase your damage per second, increase your rate of healing with Life Steal, and it allows you to handle big crowds of enemies and horde waves easier.

How the game calculates attack speed is more complicated, but in most cases, it simply makes you attack x% faster. There are some exceptions:
* Melee weapons' attack speed is slightly affected by having higher Range. For example, 100 Range will reduce your attack speed by 3% to 10% (depending on the weapon), though they will also be able to hit more enemies.

* Negative Attack speed increases the cooldown of your weapons, meaning you attack slower. However, it uses a different formula: You would expect -100% attack speed to double the cooldown of the weapon, but that is only the case for a very few weapons. Slow weapons and ranged weapons are hit harder by negative attack speed. If you have -100% attack speed, a Fist (Tier 4) attacks 14% less often. While a Nuclear Launcher (T4) attacks 46% less often.
* There is a minimum attack speed for weapons. Going too close to this limit results in severe diminishing returns for some weapons. Fast melee weapons like Fist (T4) and Circular Saw (T4) have diminishing returns from 0% Attack speed, but are less affected than ranged weapons. Fast ranged weapons like SMG (T4), Flamethrower (T4), Potato Thrower (T4), and Minigun (T3 & T4) also have diminishing returns from 0% and higher attack speed, and are affected more than the melee weapons. The diminishing returns start out slow, and become more prominent the more attack speed you have. So getting the first 50%-100% attack speed while being affected by diminishing returns can still be worth it, but getting more will give very little value.

It is worth noting that the tooltip rounds the attack speed of your weapons down to the nearest 0.01 second. However this is just a visual - the actual game doesn't round the value.

Attack speed doesn't apply to turrets, or to items like Cyberball, Baby with a Beard, or Rip and Tear.

Ball and Chain
The Ball and Chain item is a special case of negative attack speed items. When acquired, your weapons cannot have a cooldown that is lower than 0.75 seconds. Note that this doesn't include the animation that melee weapons have. So for melee weapons, their minimum cooldown with Ball and Call will be more than 0.75 seconds depending on how long the range of the weapon is.

* A Cursed Ball and Chain will have a minimum cooldown that is lower than 0.75 seconds. This opens the Cursed Ball and Chain up to being useful on more builds.

<table class="wikitable sortable jquery-tablesorter" style="width:90%;color:#eee; background:transparent; text-align:center; vertical-align:middle;">
