Trees
Trees are neutral units that spawn throughout waves. They can be killed for good Loot.

Trees drop 3 Materials on death, and have a 100% to drop a Consumable. This consumable has a base 20% chance to be a Loot Crate, which increases with Luck.

Note that unlike the Loot Hoarder, trees are not guaranteed to drop consumables. So if you have negative Luck, or are playing Endless Mode, trees might not drop consumables.
Thing
Effects
Notes

Increases the amount of trees that spawn.
Grants on average 0.33 trees spawned every 10 seconds.

Allows you to kill trees in one hit, as if the tree had 1 HP.
Trees by default have a limit, where they will die after taking 8 hits. The Shirt changes this to 1 hit instead.

Starts with the equivalent of 12 items.
Also, the first group of trees spawn at the beginning of the wave instead of 10 seconds in.
(But the second tree spawn is still after 20 seconds just like with everyone else)

Starts with the equivalent of 6 items.
Does not have the early trees feature that has.

Spawn
Trees have a chance to spawn every 10 seconds. The first chance for trees to spawn is 10 seconds into the wave. The exception is , whose first spawn of trees happen at the start of the wave, but the second spawn still happens after 20 seconds for Explorer.

A random number between 1 and 2 + your Tree Secondary stat is chosen.

Then the game will attempt to spawn a tree with a 33% chance that number of times.

This means that every 10 seconds, an average of 0.5 Trees + 0.33 times your Tree secondary stat spawns.

So for , who starts with a Tree stat of 12, a average of 4.5 trees will spawn each 10 seconds.

Spawn Smoother
In Patch 1.0.0.3 a mechanic was added to smooth out the spawning of trees.

For example with , who has a +12 to the Tree Stat, meaning that they will have 13-14 trees spawning at a 33% rate by default every 10 seconds.

Before, every 10 seconds, the game would first flip a coin to decide if it was attempting to spawn 1 or 2 (+12 Tree Stat), so 13 or 14 Trees. Then it would begin spawning all of those trees. But each tree only had a 33% spawn rate. So in theory 0 trees could spawn, if each of those 33% chance checks failed to spawn a tree. But there was also a tiny chance for 14 Trees to spawn.

With the introduction of , who has a +6 to the Tree stat. The randomness was annoying for players, so a mechanic was added to smooth out the spawning.

So the Explorer, who has an average of 13.5 Trees spawning at a 0.33 rate, has an average of 4.5 Trees will spawn each 10 seconds. With the Spawn Smoother, the game will see the 4.5 average and simply spawn 4 trees, and roll a 50% chance for the 0.5 left over tree. So now 4-5 trees will spawn, keeping the same average, but prevent wildly unpredictable results.

Neutral
Trees are Neutral. This means that they are treated differently by the game in several instances. Trees are currently the only Neutral Unit implemented in the game.

* Trees being neutral, means that they aren't affected by some effects like 's ability to increase the amount of enemies. They also don't count against the maximum number of enemies that can be on the map at once.
* In the same manner, doesn't increase the amount of Materials dropped by Trees. (But their HP increases)
* Bouncing Attacks like the ones from do not target neutral units when finding a target for their bounce, but the bounces can still hit trees if it crosses the path of the projectile.
* Furthermore, Burn doesn't spread to Neutral Units if you have the item. You can still set the tree on fire by attacking it directly.

General Guide
Damage
The Masochist begins with Damage, meaning that most weapons will deal only damage until the player takes enough hits to stack the damage buff.

Taking 20 hits (regardless of how much damage each hit deals) will completely offset this initial downside with Damage. Additional hits taken beyond this point will continue to stack the Damage bonus into the positives.

It is better to be hit by Enemies that deal low damage. Such as:

Stats
The following stats will help to mitigate damage taken from enemies while intentionally taking hits:
*Max HP increases the amount of damage that can be taken.
*HP Regeneration and Life Steal increase HP recovery.
**Luck will increase the rate of health pickup drops from Enemies - another effective but less reliable source of HP recovery.
*Armor is very important to reduce the damage taken from each hit.
*Dodge can be helpful to reduce the frequency of hits taken, but will also reduce the rate at which Damage will be stacked.
**Ideally, Dodge should be kept as low as possible unless Blood Donation has been acquired while other defensive stats should be prioritized.
Turrets and mines are not affected by the Damage stat. This means that their damage will not be reduced by the initial Damage debuff, but they will also not benefit from the Damage buff received when taking damage.

Synergies
Item
Effects
Notes
style="text-align:center" |
Blood Donation
Blood Donation deals 1 damage to the player every second while giving +40 to Harvesting.
The damage dealt by Blood Donation will trigger the Masochist's passive effect, providing +5% Damage every second when it triggers. This provides a way to quickly stack Damage each wave while taking significantly less damage to do so. For comparison, the rate at which the Masochist's Damage increases with Blood Donation will be five times the rate provided by Wisdom, completely counteracting the initial -100% Damage debuff within the first 20 seconds of each wave and adding an additional +100% Damage for each additional 20 seconds that pass.

The first 10 points of HP Regeneration will provide enough HP recovery to offset Blood Donation's damage, and the Masochist begins with 20 - making it safe to purchase at any time. Once acquired, investing in Dodge may also become more valuable to reduce how many hits are taken from Enemies since the damage from Blood Donation cannot be dodged and will provide a sizable boost on its own.

Obtaining a second Blood Donation will not increase the rate at which Damage increases but will increase the damage taken each second to 2 while providing another +40 Harvesting.

style="text-align:center" |
Bloody Hand
Bloody Hand deals 1 damage to the player every second while giving +40 to Harvesting.
Bloody Hand provides the same benefits that Blood Donation does, triggering Masochist's passive effect once per second.

Depending on how much lifesteal you already have, Bloody Hand can provide extra healing and Damage instead of providing harvesting.
